Do you feel anxious or overwhelmed when entering your home?
Do you spend a lot of time looking for things you know you’ve purchased?
Do you have a hard time using your counters or tables because they are full of stuff?
When the clutter keeps returning after you’ve tried organizing and when you are constantly buying/finding duplicates, those are the signs of having more to manage then you actually have space for; and signs that it’s time to declutter.
Decluttering and simplifying your spaces is the powerful first step to freedom, function, and wellness. Here are a few ways to tackle the task with ease because we want you to stop letting things you do not want, do not like, or don’t even use, clutter your space, mind, peace, and energy!
- Let your values guide you in the ways you want to create a welcoming, nurturing, restorative environment…don’t go into this blind
- Address the why’s- why you have decided to start decluttering, and why things got to be in the state they are in. If clutter is getting in the way of function, ease, time, and connections, it’s time to reevaluate how you want your home to feel and how it serves your needs.
- Be ready to change- it’s the key to your success because decluttering is 20% behavior and 80% mindset. If your mind is not ready to embrace change you will have a tough time. Decide that you will work through the challenge instead of letting it defeat you; AND understand your consistency level.
- Forget perfection- go at your own pace and make tiny steps until you are satisfied with the outcomes. Start with small easy to tackle projects that are easy to accomplish, providing internal motivation.
- Make your home easy to manage- to ensure that tidying and cleaning does not take you hours to complete, only have the things you want, need, and love in your home
- Toss obvious trash- some stuff is obviously broken or used to capacity and honestly no matter how much you paid or who gave it to you, some things will never be used or have served its purpose.
- Make it a habit- make decluttering a consistent part of your self care and maintenance routine, ensuring that the task is not too much to take on when done sparsely. Habits such as 10-minute tidying every evening make a huge difference in clutter management.
- Consider the person you are now- if you have clothing from decades ago or sentimental items passed down to you, do not feel guilty for tossing those things. Create your home for who you are now, considering if you would purchase those items now.
- Give yourself a deadline- it can be 30 minutes or 7 days…just start. Make it fun by setting a timer, turning on music, or stacking a habit on top of something you’re already doing.
You’ve got this!
